On Wednesday, May 13, elementary students from Pike Township visited Peace Learning Center for a day of exploration, teamwork, and reflection in the woods of Eagle Creek Park.
For many students, the visit was a chance to step outside the classroom and experience learning in a new way. Throughout the day, they were invited to explore nature, collaborate with classmates, and practice skills that help build stronger, more peaceful communities.
One activity encouraged students to work together creatively. In small groups, they designed and built everything from buildings and rockets to dinosaurs. One student, placed in a group with three boys, quickly found her voice and led her team in building a time machine. It was a small but powerful example of what can happen when young people are trusted, encouraged, and given room to lead.
Another group headed into the woods for a guided hike with Macey, who encouraged students to ask questions, notice their surroundings, and enjoy the natural world around them. Along the shoreline, students learned how Eagle Creek Reservoir was created. For some, it was their first time spending that much time surrounded by nature. The ducks were an instant favorite every time they appeared on the water.
The day also included an active listening activity led by Clare. Sitting together in a large circle, students took a quiet moment to settle themselves before learning how listening can help prevent conflicts before they grow. Each student had the chance to speak, reflect, and respond. Clare also introduced the group to a singing bowl from Nepal, giving students another way to experience calm, focus, and connection.
By the end of the field trip, students were already asking how they could return to Peace Learning Center for summer camp. As they walked back toward the bus, they carried more than memories of a fun day in the park. They left with new tools for listening, working together, and helping make their world more peaceful.
